Position Summary:

The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) - a world-renowned non-profit biomedical research organization - is seeking a highly motivated, resourceful Director of Communications to manage the communications programs at both the La Jolla, CA and Jupiter, FL campuses. Based in La Jolla, CA, this position is responsible to provide direction for TSRI’s external and internal communications, marketing and media relations programs through the development, execution and implementation of a broad strategy to enhance the public awareness of TSRI while supporting the core scientific, academic, philanthropic and administrative objectives of the institute. Will work with senior management to address crisis management and as needed, act as spokesperson for the institute with the press and media representatives, responding to planned and spontaneous requests for information about TSRI, its programs, or individual faculty.

Essential Duties

  • Oversee public relations, marketing and internal communications in California and Florida according to institute priorities.
  • Manage the Communications Department, including staff members and various freelancers (including a writer/public relations consultant for Florida and other writers and photographers)
  • Conduct media relations, including sending out press releases and advisories, managing media lists, interacting with reporters, and coordinating with scientists, journals, colleagues at other academic institutions, and personnel at the NIH
  • Actively work with senior management on issues and crisis management. Be "on call" for emergencies and breaking news; participate in emergency planning for the institute; develop crisis communications plans
  • Work with the Philanthropy Department on marketing materials, including writing proposals and letters, overseeing web page and newsletter design, and contributing to other fundraising material as needed
  • Participate in government relations, including producing and reviewing communications such as letters, texts and handouts
  • Draft select communications from the institute president, including letters, statements, comments, emails, op-ed pieces and texts
  • Act as spokesperson for the institute as needed
  • Manage the communications portions of the Scripps Research website
  • Oversee the online newsletter, News &Views, for both internal and external audiences, including editorial direction, writing, photography, graphics, and production
  • Oversee social media presence for the institute, including content and design elements on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Pinterest
  • Advise colleagues and senior management on communications and public relations issues
  • Prepare press clippings for the Board of Trustees
  • Manage the institute’s graphic and editorial standards (logos, etc.)
  • Oversee other general publications, such as brochures
  • Supervise tours of select visitors and special delegations, including meetings and presentations about the institute
  • Manage the Communications Department budget and allocate resources in an efficient manner
  • Performs other duties and projects as necessary or assigned
Location: California
Additional Information:
  • Weekend and/or evening availability required based on emergencies, breaking news and department or projects. May be required to occasionally travel to Florida campus, involving overnight stays.
  • Participate in emergency planning for the institute; develop crisis communications plans.
Physical Requirements:

This position works in a typical office environment. With or without reasonable accommodation, employees in this position must be able to sit and type at a computer terminal for up to 8 hours per day with appropriate breaks and perform tasks that require fine dexterity and repetitive motions using the arms, hands, wrists and fingers. Further details of the physical requirements of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor degree in Communications, Journalism, Media Relations, Public Relations, Public Affairs, Journalism or equivalent relevant discipline or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Minimum 10 years progressively responsible and related experience in writing and editing articles and press releases, marketing, public and media relations, including knowledge and experience managing social media presence.
  • Supervisory or management experience including people, projects and budgets.
  • Demonstrated superior oral/written communication skills, presentation skills, extensive experience performing corporate communication programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Preferred experience in medical/scientific writing.
  • Thorough knowledge of ethical guidelines and professional standards of media relations.
  • A broad understanding of and appreciation for, the functional components of public relations and internal communications.
  • A high level of intellectual, professional and interpersonal agility and flexibility, combined with solid analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Ability to stay abreast of and understand shifting trends in traditional and social media outlets.
