Position Summary:

The Scripps Research Institute is currently seeking a Sponsored Programs Administration Sr. Director who will report jointly to the Vice President of Finance (CFO) and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs (EVPAA), and oversees pre- and post-award grants and contracts administration for both campuses (CA & FL). This role involves overall management of the sponsored programs office and requires sophisticated knowledge of federal regulatory environment, the ability to provide detailed oversight of systems, processes and personnel in view of federal, state and private foundational grant funding policies, guidelines and contract terms. The incumbent will act as a liaison to national agencies, coordinate activities amongst the wide range of TSRI’s programs and play a key role in the annual budgeting process.


  • Formulating grant and contract administration policy and procedures for approval and promulgation by the Vice President for Finance and the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs;
  • Providing decision support information and tools to executive management;
  • Overseeing the negotiation, execution and administration, of sponsored project grants and contracts from federal and non-profit sponsors throughout TSRI from inception through closeout;
  • Oversee administration of non-governmental sponsored project grants and contracts (corporate sponsored research agreements negotiated and executed by the Office of Technology Development) from award receipt through closeout;
  • Assuring timely receipt of and proper fiscal stewardship for sponsor funds;
  • Support the negotiation of F&A cost and employee benefit rates;
  • In cooperation with other TSRI offices, assuring TSRI compliance with federal requirements such as effort reporting, cost sharing and service centers;
  • Maintaining liaison with sponsoring agencies concerning TSRI’s sponsored programs and related policies and procedures; representing TSRI in negotiations with sponsoring agencies to assure consistent contract and grant provisions and policies; resolving problems and settling disputes;
  • In cooperation with other TSRI offices, assuring compliance with sponsor’s policies, e.g., fiscal, property, intellectual property, human and animal subjects, and the like;
  • In cooperation with other TSRI offices maintaining official records concerning sponsored projects including official grant and contract files;
  • Assisting faculty and department staff in the preparation of proposals and other administrative aspects of sponsored projects as needed; and
  • Develop training for faculty and administrative staff in the policies, procedures and practices of TSRI and sponsors.
  • Advocate for systems and processes within the finance and accounting areas which meet the compliance and reporting covenants of each grant or contract.
  • Implement a professional development program for OSP staff.

This position works in a typical office environment. Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Accounting or similar area of study, or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience. MBA or advanced degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of progressively responsible federal grants/contract management experience, preferably in an academic/non-profit environment, including financial and budget management, preferably with NIH grants and large foundation grants in an independent research institution.
  • Experience with and working knowledge of the federal Uniform Guidance regarding research grants and contracts administration and financial management, fiscal planning and analysis, direct and indirect cost analysis and audit procedures.
  • Proven management experience with a record of taking the initiative and operating decisively within a complex and fast paced environment, examining current practices and processes with a willingness to make continuous improvements to ensure that the Institute moves forward.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a balance of assertiveness and diplomacy, integrity and honesty beyond reproach and be skilled at building team cohesion to drive performance.
  • Ability to organize, oversee and perform multiple tasks, delegate priorities and meet deadlines.
