Position Title Animal Health Technician I
Position Summary:

The Scripps Research Institute is currently seeking an Animal Health Technician I. Under the general supervision of the Institutional Animal Program Sr. Director, the Animal Health Technician I will;

  • Perform standard para-veterinary health care procedures and may perform new standard procedures requiring ingenuity, resourcefulness and adaptability. Procedures are typically performed without detailed supervision, usually in a clinical or laboratory animal setting.
  • Complement the animal husbandry staff in performance of daily observations of animal colonies for signs of illness and follows-up on animals reported ill on Animal Health Reports.
  • Ensure that animal care problems and concerns are reported to the veterinarian for consultation, advice or instructions.
  • Administer and/or direct the administration of any necessary medications or treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian including follow-up procedures and daily documentation of all procedures in the Animal Health Reports or individual animal health records.
  • Under the guidance of the Institutional Animal Program Sr. Director and in conjunction with the diagnostic laboratory staff, coordinates and/or conducts certain veterinary diagnostic procedures, maintenance of preventive medicine programs including routine parasitology on newly arriving animals, monthly prophylaxis on established colonies, maintenance of sentinel animal program and submission of animals, tumors and cell lines, and pathological specimens to contract diagnostic laboratories.
  • Oversee the maintenance of current animal health monitoring, treatment and follow-up records. Documentation of such records is required for regulatory compliance and must be recorded daily into the DAR animal health database.
  • May perform gross necropsies in accordance with veterinarian’s instructions and appropriately prepares specimens for laboratory processing.
  • Participate in routine clinical rounds to keep veterinary staff apprised of the status of para-veterinary activities in the animal facilities.
  • Monitor the maintenance of sanitized, well-stocked and organized animal use areas, such as procedure rooms, necropsy room and surgical suite, including preparing surgical packs, seeing that equipment and instruments are clean and functioning properly, and agents administered to animal are not expired.
  • Oversee the maintenance of current records for all medications ordered, stocked and dispensed.
  • Participate in and/or conducts teaching activities by instructing and demonstrating techniques or procedures which are recorded and maintained as official performance documentation.
  • Coordinate the performance of routine quality control testing of cagewash and water purification and treatment systems in cooperation with the diagnostic laboratory staff.
  • Follow established TSRI and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines.
  • Practice a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Attend meetings as required. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Monday - Friday
7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Weekend and holiday rotation as required

Physical Requirements:

With or without reasonable accommodation, employees in this position must be able to work with animals for up to 8 hours a day and lift feed bags and animal cages up to 50 pounds; as well as perform repetitive motions with arms, wrists and hands. This position may also include utilizing latex gloves and working in an environment that contains animal dander and dust particles. Further details of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Any combination of the following: completion of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited Animal Health Technician program; Bachelor degree in Animal Science or a biological science; Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license; AALAS certification (LATG preferred); 2 years laboratory animal research or clinical experience; or equivalent education, training and experience as determined by the hiring manager.
  • Knowledge of the Guide for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (the "Guide"), Animal Welfare Regulations (AWRs), Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) standards of accreditation, and the ability to learn TSRI Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocol provisions.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic and laboratory equipment, surgical and diagnostic instruments, centrifuges, autoclaves, microscopes. Ability to participate in weekend/holiday work rotation.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and Access preferred.
  • Working knowledge of web page management, or the ability to learn same.
