Position Title Bioinformatics Analyst I Microbiome
Position Summary:

The Bioinformatics Analyst will report to Professor Ali Torkamani, Director of Genomics at The Scripps Translational Science Institute and Professor M. Reza Ghadiri, Department of Chemistry at Scripps Research and Member of the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology to provide practical, creative, and comprehensive solutions to cutting edge problems in genetics and genomics and chemical biology of the gut microbiome. This role will work with a small team of computational and quantitative biologists on genomics projects primarily focused on the analysis of microbiome populations and their changes in relation to disease and other perturbations.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Perform programming and analysis, coding with Python, Java, etc.
  • Perform comprehensive cohort level statistical genetics analyses from microbiome data - including 16S profiling an abundance characterization, shotgun sequence-based microbiome analysis, and transcriptome base functional microbiome analysis.
  • Manipulate large genomic datasets, primarily with existing genomic software packages.
  • Ensure data quality, integrity and testing.
  • Be part of a dynamic and cohesive team of highly trained and successful researchers.
  • Contribute to scientific publications and open source projects.

Physical Requirements:

This position works in a laboratory or vivarium environment. Further details of the physical requirements of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process.

Basic Qualifications:

Requires a bachelor’s degree, preferably in Computer Science (CS), Bioinformatics, Biomedical Informatics, Computational Biology, or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience. Master’s degree preferred. Early stage PhD candidates may also be considered.
Requires a minimum of 1-3 years related bioinformatics experience.

  • Advanced skills in a high-level programming language, preferably Python, or R.
  • Experience with genomics software packages, QIIME, mothur, or related packages.
  • Up to 2 years of programming experience, preferably in a high performance computing setting.
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of microbiome biology, including both the considerations for in vitro and in vivo studies, normalization, and contamination detection.
  • Familiarity with statistical learning techniques, from regression to machine learning.
  • Experience with architecture and tools for managing large datasets - especially "omics" data.
  • Excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems.
  • Excellent organizational skills, problem solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
