Position Summary:

Scripps Research is currently seeking a Chief Information Officer reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, functions as a member of the senior management team at Scripps Research and is responsible for Information Systems at both the California and Florida campuses. This position is a succession role that will overlap for some months with the current CIO until retirement.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Oversees the following functional areas for the entire organization:
  • Premise-based and cloud-based IT infrastructure (servers, email, storage, backup, etc.)
  • Wired and wireless networks
  • Telecommunications
  • Classroom and general-purpose audio-visual assets and support
  • Helpdesk and user support services
  • Information security
  • Applications support for ERP, business, HR and other administrative software applications
  • Applications acquisition (or where appropriate, applications development) for new software applications
  • Stewardship of datacenters and governance over cloud-based IS services; and other emerging Information Technology needs of the Institute.
  • Shares responsibility for High Performance Computing with the Director of HPC and is supportive of the IS activities of Faculty and their laboratory teams through an advisory and consultative role.
  • Serves as the Chair of the Institute’s "Information Systems Steering Committee" and provides staff support and direction to carry out the direction of this Information Systems governance committee.
  • Rapidly strategizes, plans, and executes around urgent institutional matters involving information technology, including day-to-day management as required.
  • Recruits, develops, and retains a high-performing team characterized by collaboration, responsiveness, and accountability.
  • Identifies, assesses, and mitigates institutional risk as it relates to information technology.
  • Participates in professional activities and maintains professional affiliations to maintain knowledge of current industry and professional trends.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Physical Requirements:

This position works in a typical office environment. With or without reasonable accommodation, employees in this position must be able to sit and type at a computer terminal for up to 8+ hours per day with appropriate breaks and perform tasks that require fine dexterity and repetitive motions using the arms, hands, wrists and fingers. Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • Advanced degree in a field of study that is appropriate to the challenges of a CIO.
  • Minimum 15 years of directly related, cumulative and progressively responsible experience including substantial experience as an IT executive overseeing other IT management staff.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to solve problems creatively and efficiently.
  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy and be trusted with confidential information of the highest degree.
  • Comfortable with constantly changing and evolving priorities.
  • Track record of thinking strategically and collaboratively about future opportunities and developing innovative solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability and success in leading a full-service information systems organization in a medium to large-scale research, medical, or academic environment.
  • Technical expertise in some or all of the functional areas to be managed.
  • Experience with implementing contemporary system architectures in a complex setting.
  • Superior project-management skills and abilities.
  • History of leadership that demonstrates an ability to accomplish goals by working in unison with others.
  • Demonstrated recent experience in making transformative changes in information systems or operations.
  • Experience with serving as a strategic adviser and thought partner to senior leadership.
  • Advanced analytical and reporting skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Excellent follow-through skills and the ability to operate independently.
  • Professionalism, sensitivity and discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Working knowledge of biomedical sciences and the application of information technologies to the conduct of science preferred.
