* Work closely with the Senior Director of Philanthropy and Vice President, Philanthropy and Community Engagement to ensure that philanthropy goals and objectives are met.
* Partners with the other Senior Directors and Directors of Philanthropy to build a robust major gifts program supporting the current and future resource needs with a specific focus on high-net worth individuals.
* Manage a portfolio of major gift prospects through the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship process with an emphasis on $100,000+ gifts.
* Create and execute on a comprehensive annual philanthropy plan with goals and objectives that include thoughtful portfolio analysis, strategic individual prospect plans, and clearly defined metrics for the purpose of closing major gifts.
* Partner with philanthropy colleagues in support of fundraising initiatives and strategies for major gifts, annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, planned giving, and principal gifts.
* Travel for the purpose of developing prospect relationships and solicitation of prospects.
* Utilize the Raiser’s Edge database to demonstrate the utmost discipline in documenting the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and follow-up strategies for each prospect and donor.
* Ensure that all materials, including letters, proposals and reports, are well-written, accurate and submitted in a timely manner.
* Demonstrate proactive resourcefulness in investigating prospective donors through personal contact, prospect research, volunteers, Principal Investigators and other donors.
* Coordinate scientific presentations and on-site tours for prospective donors, community groups, and others with whom Scripps Research needs to engage.
* Work closely with the philanthropy office staff for special events and prospect research.
* Effectively communicate the goals and needs of Scripps Research to prospective donors and the public; and represent the philanthropy department at lectures, dinners, and other donor events.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
Use knowledge, experience and judgment to identify appropriate donors, foster relationships and solicit major gift prospects to achieve goals. In consultation with the Senior Director and sometimes with the Vice President, Philanthropy and Community Engagement, source donors and contribute to the planning of high-level cultivation strategies and timelines to further engage prospect and donors in Scripps Research work and more deeply connect them to the organization.
Interact externally with various potential donors to solicit, cultivate and steward relationships. Interact internally with executive management, faculty, grad students, and administrative management such as Controller, Dean of Graduate and Postdoc Studies, etc. in order to gather supporting information for proposals and/or gain support/approval. Collaborate with peer gift officers concerning the cross-cultivation of major gift, annual and planned giving prospects. Initiates and engages in collegial, transparent prospect strategy discussions to help advance the team’s goals effectively.

Work on problems complex in scope where critical analysis of situations requires in-depth evaluation of intangible variables requiring a high degree of ingenuity, creativity, and innovation to achieve business milestones and fundraising goals.
SUPERVISION OF OTHERS
Individual contributor. Does not supervise but may assign work to an assistant or coordinator in philanthropy.
|Basic Qualifications: || |
* Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience is required.
* 5+ years of experience demonstrating fundraising success and comprehensive portfolio management that includes the identification, solicitation, and stewardship of multiple, high-capacity donors in the $100,000+ range, preferably in biomedical research, healthcare, or higher education.
* Demonstrated success in closing proposal driven solicitations, preferably in the six figure and above range.
* Intelligence, maturity, and sound judgment, necessary for interacting with major donors and prospects, faculty, staff, and other constituents.
* Project management skills and a demonstrated ability to set and complete priority projects under deadline.
* Ability to represent Scripps Research with a wide range of constituencies in a manner that heightens the quality of the relationship and advances the positive perceptions of the institute.
* Initiative, superior written and verbal communication skills with a keen attention to detail, and commitment and ability to articulate the institute’s purpose
* Excellent interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to relate well with individuals at every level of the organization, both internally and externally.
* Professional with a high level of poise and professionalism, including follow-through and attention to detail.
* Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
* Donor management systems experience, e.g. Raisers Edge or Salesforce.
* Some travel required, as are evenings and weekends for special events and donor visits.
