|Department Name:||Immunology and Microbiology - CA|
|Position Type:||Full Time|
|Position Title||Postdoctoral Associate|
|Position Summary:|| |
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major health burden worldwide with 240 million chronically infected individuals. Although current standards of care suppress HBV replication, they fail to eradicate HBV from individuals. Therefore, new strategies are absolutely required to cure HBV.
Our laboratory identified a novel and exciting therapeutic approach showing solid premises to provide such a cure. We developed a new in vivo imaging system that allows us to visualize and monitor in live the growth or death of bioluminescent HBV-human infected hepatocytes in the liver of mice.
This in live bioluminescent visualization system permitted us to identify a new adeno-associated virus gene therapy strategy that kills HBV-infected hepatocytes in mice but preserved non-infected cells. This novel therapeutic strategy exploits the viral replication machinery to induce apoptosis and cell death, thereby eliminating normally resilient HBV reservoirs.
A postdoctoral position is immediately available to further develop this in live visualization system and this HBV cure.
