With the recent acquisition of the big pharm’s legacy strain collection, Scripps now houses one of the world’s largest actinobacteria strain collections, totaling ~100,000 strains (J. Biol. Chem. 2019, 194, 16567-16576). On the assumption that each strain encodes ~30 natural product (NP) biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs), the 100,000 actinobacteria strains could potentially encode up to ~3 million BGCs. Considering only ~700 high quality actinobacteria genomes are currently available in the public databases, sequencing a diverse set of the actinobacteria, based on their taxonomic, geographical, ecological, and temporal distributions, and making data and strains available to the scientific community could revolutionize the current paradigm of natural product discovery (Trends Pharmacol. Sci. 2020, 41, 13-26).
We have launched a large-scale genome sequencing initiative and have several postdoctoral research associate positions open.
Exceptional candidates with extensive independent research experience may be appointed to the rank of staff scientist.
