Position Summary:

The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) also known as Scripps Research is currently seeking a Research Assistant II for the laboratory of Dr. Roy at the Florida campus. The Roy Lab is seeking a highly motivated researcher with a strong background in biochemistry and molecular biology to join our team.

Key Responsibilities:
* Cloning, expression and isolation of proteins from bacterial and fungal cells.
* To optimize and execute enzymatic assays with proteins and small ligand-molecules.
* Work in an interdisciplinary environment and gain experience.
* Documentation / maintenance of laboratory notebook.

The selected candidate will perform a variety of scientific experiments and laboratory duties. Primary tasks will involve cloning and isolation of proteins. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with other lab members to include the design, completion, troubleshooting and interpretation of scientific experiments. Other duties and tasks may be required or assigned as needed.

Position Description

Perform research under minimal supervision, independently and in collaboration with others and conduct a wide variety of standard laboratory procedures for projects; investigate, troubleshoot and modify methods and procedures as necessary; may need to assist in designing experiments; may need to provide routine equipment maintenance as well as guidance/training to other department personnel; perform other related duties, tasks and responsibilities as required or assigned. Perform a variety of routine scientific tasks; may prepare test specimens; set up and operate standard lab equipment of moderate complexity; record data providing basic analyses and interpretations; may perform a variety of procedures; perform other related duties, tasks and responsibilities as required or assigned.

Scripps-Florida provides an incredibly rich scientific environment. Scripps-Florida has a large cast of outstanding Cores that facilitate basic research and drug development. The unique infrastructure at Scripps-Florida includes the application of unique chemical, genomic, proteomic, informatics, and high-throughput screening and engineering tools for the discovery of novel biomolecules.
Scripps-Florida is a member of the South East Regional Collaborative Access Team (SER-CAT) that constructed two beam lines at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory. The insertion device and bending magnet beam lines are available for all the synchrotron-related data collection needs for the post-doctoral fellows.
Scripps-Florida provides a HighFlux X-ray diffraction system, specifically a Rigaku MicroMax-007 HF, a second-generation true microfocus rotating anode generator. Scripps-Florida also provides an Osmic VariMax optics system and the Proteros Free Mounting System to control the humidity and to optimize diffraction characteristics, including resolution, mosaicity, and anisotropy, as well as reduced X-ray background. Finally, the X-ray laboratory houses the mar345 Image Plate detector.

Physical Requirements:

This position works in a laboratory or vivarium environment. Further details of the physical requirements of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process.

Basic Qualifications:

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skill and abilities have been attained. Requires 3-5 years experience. Candidates possessing a Master’s degree, 2+ years experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience in structural biology laboratory is an advantage. The successful candidate will have strong skills in the area of molecular biology, with emphasis on cloning and protein purification. Experience in nucleic acids biochemistry and mammalian cell culture; the ability to process and interpret data; and the ability to troubleshoot biochemical assays are strongly preferred. An individual who is well organized, self-motivated, and has high standards of excellence is preferred. Candidates who are highly self-motivated with excellent problem solving and analytical skills, and who are able to work systematically both independently and within a team are preferred. The successful candidate will also have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to work in a diverse and inclusive environment.

Florida & Palm Beach County residents are preferred.
