Position Title Senior Director of Development
Position Summary:

The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) is currently seeking a Senior Director of Development for its Florida campus.

The Senior Director of Development reports to the TSRI President, and works closely with the other Directors of Development. This role is responsible for the cultivation and active management of a portfolio of 150-200 major gift prospects. This role will also provide strategic direction for the development operation’s Major Gifts program.
* Work closely with the President and other Senior Directors of Development to ensure that development goals and objectives are met.
* Partner with other Senior Directors of Development to build a robust major gifts program supporting the current and future resource needs with a specific focus on high-net worth individuals.
* Manage a portfolio of major gift prospects through the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship process with an emphasis on $50,000+ gifts.
* Create and execute on a comprehensive annual development plan with goals and objectives that include thoughtful portfolio analysis, strategic individual prospect plans, and clearly defined metrics for the purpose of closing major gifts.
* Partner with development colleagues in support of fundraising initiatives and strategies for major gifts, annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, planned giving, and principal gifts.
* Travel for the purpose of developing prospect relationships and solicitation of prospects.
* Demonstrate the utmost discipline in documenting the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and follow-up strategies for each prospect and donor.
* Prepare and distribute quarterly or annual stewardship reports to individual donors.
* Demonstrate proactive resourcefulness in investigating prospective donors through personal contact, prospect research, volunteers, Principal Investigators and other donors.
* Analyze potential giving capacity and philanthropic interests of Graduate Program alumni.
* Coordinate scientific presentations and on-site tours for prospective donors, community groups, and others with whom TSRI needs to engage.
* Work closely with the development office staff for special events and prospect research.
* Represent the development department at lectures, dinners, and other donor events.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
Use knowledge, experience and judgment to identify appropriate donors, foster relationships and solicit fundraising to achieve goals. Independently source donors and determine cultivation strategy and timeline.
Interact externally with various potential donors to solicit, cultivate and steward relationships. Interact internally with executive management, faculty, grad students, and administrative management such as Controller, Dean of Graduate and Postdoc Studies, etc. in order to gather supporting information for proposals and/or gain support/approval. Collaborate with peer gift officers concerning the cross-cultivation of major gift, annual and planned giving prospects. Initiates and engages in collegial, transparent prospect strategy discussions to help advance the team’s goals effectively.
Work on problems extremely complex in scope where critical analysis of situations require in-depth evaluation of intangible variables requiring a high degree of ingenuity, creativity, and innovation to achieve business milestones and fundraising goals.
Individual contributor. Does not supervise, but may assign work to an assistant or coordinator in development.

Physical Requirements:

This position works in a typical office environment. With or without reasonable accommodation, employees in this position must be able to sit and type at a computer terminal for up to 8 hours per day with appropriate breaks and perform tasks that require fine dexterity and repetitive motions using the arms, hands, wrists and fingers. Basic Qualifications:

* Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience is required.
* 5+ years of experience demonstrating success in securing five, six, and seven figure gifts or record of accomplishment that includes the identification, solicitation, and stewardship of multiple, high-capacity donors in the $100,000+ range, preferably in biomedical research, healthcare, or higher education.
* Demonstrated success in building a major gifts program as part of a comprehensive development department.
* Campaign fundraising experience preferred.
* Intelligence, maturity, and sound judgment, necessary for interacting with major donors and prospects, faculty, staff, and other constituents.
* Project management skills and a demonstrated ability to set and complete priority projects under deadline.
* Initiative, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills.
* High level of poise and professionalism, including follow-through and attention to detail.
* Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
* Donor management systems experience, e.g. Raisers Edge or Salesforce.
* Some travel required, as are evenings and weekends for special events and donor visits.

Preferred Qualifications:

Florida & Palm Beach County residents are preferred.
