Position Type: Full Time
Position Title Senior Science Writer & Communications Officer
Position Summary:

The Department of Communications at Scripps Research is looking for a talented and experienced science writer and media relations guru who excels at translating high-impact scientific research into compelling communications for a range of non-scientific audiences.
This person will be the primary writer, editor and point person for communicating the Institute’s scientific excellence and impact through our earned, owned and paid channels. This includes identifying feature and news story ideas, interviewing and coordinating with Institute leadership, faculty, students and other sources, and writing accessible, accurate and intriguing copy.

The position will require reading highly technical scientific papers, typically in the fields of molecular biology, neuroscience or chemistry, interviewing scientists about the research, and writing releases and stories about the work for non-scientific audiences.
In addition to being a top-notch science writer, this person will be the front-line media relations officer for science-related media outreach, cultivating relationships with local and national science media, developing and delivering pitches to reporters, and overseeing the logistics of arranging interviews and broadcast visits to campus. This person will work with the Vice President and Senior Director of Communications to develop and implement effective strategies for growing the Institute’s media coverage in print, broadcast and digital channels.
In collaboration with other members of the team, this person will help produce written and multimedia content for a range of communications vehicles, such as social media, print collateral, websites, advertising, email newsletters, videos and podcasts. This person will also play a key role in conceptualizing and producing Scripps Research Magazine, the Institute’s periodical magazine. The communications office at Scripps Research supports the Institute’s business development and philanthropy departments, and this position will assist in communicating the institution’s research to priority audiences of these departments.
