Position Title Technology Development, Asst. Director
Position Summary:

The Assistant Director of Technology Development reports to the Director and facilitates technology licensing opportunities and promotes awareness of intellectual property (IP) protection and technology transfer between researchers and industry.


  • Serves as the primary connection with scientists to identify new technology licensing opportunities.
  • Markets new technologies to biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.
  • Prepares and distributes promotional and evaluation materials to potential licensees of technology
  • Initiates contact with companies and conducts meetings and presentations with potential licensees.
  • Drafts and negotiates a wide variety of contracts, including but not limited to License Agreements, Sponsored Research Agreements, Material Transfer Agreements, and Confidentiality Agreements.
  • Sources internal research programs for commercialization opportunities, with special emphasis on areas of institutional excellence.
  • Organizes and participates in joint research or steering committee meetings with existing alliance partners. Proactively communicates with alliance partners in attendance to various matters, resolution of issues and maintenance of positive relationships.
  • Serves as liaison between investigators and industry connections for development opportunities.
  • Provides advice to investigators regarding technology transfer, licensing, consulting, conflict of interest, and other related topics on an ongoing basis.
  • Provides guidance to licensing officers in developing the appropriate agreement structures and language.
  • Performs other special projects and duties as assigned
  • Makes decisions of low to moderate expense risk within established guidelines, in accordance with governmental regulations and internal procedures.
  • Uses scientific and technology transfer knowledge to evaluate manuscripts and disclosure agreements for commercialization opportunities.
  • Assists director as point of contact for internal labs/departments in solicitation of technology transfer and development services.
  • Interacts with professors, scientific administrative assistant and management level personnel at other companies.
  • Acts as primary point of contact for external organizations soliciting information about licensing opportunities with the Institute.
  • Manage tech development staff, including hiring, training and performance management.

Physical Requirements:

This position works in a typical office environment. With or without reasonable accommodation, employees in this position must be able to sit and type at a computer terminal for up to 8 hours per day with appropriate breaks and perform tasks that require fine dexterity and repetitive motions using the arms, hands, wrists and fingers. Basic Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in life science or similar area of study, or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Ph.D. in biology or chemistry or similar area preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years related business development and/or technology transfer experience.
  • Experience analyzing legal documents, including technology licensing agreements and sponsored research contracts.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent presentation and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize activities.
  • Proficient with using databases for managing information, reporting, and analysis.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Specialized training in intellectual property and contract administration preferred.
  • Understanding of technology transfer and technology valuation principles and procedures.
  • The ability to develop a thorough understanding of government regulations, requirements, and obligations as they apply to technology transfer.
  • Experience with database management, such as Sophia (Wellspring) preferred.
  • Experience with the practice of patent or contract law.
  • Project management experience.
